What is Reiki

Reiki is a speritual art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is notaffiliated with any particular religion practice. It is not a massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energywork using spiritually guided life force energy.

Reiki is the life energy that flows through all living things. It is beleived that aperson’s (ki) or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true a persons body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

What to do before your Reiki session

1. Relax and reflect.

Give yourself at least 30 minutes prior to the session to sit and reflect. Check in

with how your body is feeling and take note of any emotions, thoughts, or physical

sensations you are experiencing.

Take some time to breathe and tend to whatever your body needs might be on that

given day. You may also want to reflect on any intentions you want to set for your

session, and anything you want to share with your practitioner before you begin.

2. Eat and hydrate.

You’ll want to be sure you have eaten and hydrated a few hours before the

session—mostly so you will be comfortable and not distracted by hunger or thirst.

Avoid eating a heavy meal beforehand, however, as you don’t want all of your

body’s energy to be directed toward digesting while you’re receiving your

treatment.

3. Get comfortable.

Most practitioners will have you laying down for the majority of your session,

since comfort is key if you want to be open to taking on and integrating the Reiki

energy.

Be sure you are wearing loose and breathable clothes. I usually tell my clients to

either wear or bring socks since shoes are removed during the session and the feet

can get cold.

You’ll also want to use the restroom before the session. If the position you are in

for your session is uncomfortable in any way, communicate this to your

practitioner, as they will also want to be sure you are as relaxed as possible.

A Typical Session

A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels -physical, mental and emotional. A session is pleasant and relaxing and is often utilized for one’s personal wellness.

A session is usually 45 to 60 minutes long. A discussion will take place during initial session to complete client intake form and informed consent. This time is also an opportunity for the client to discuss what they are hoping to achieve from their session.

For the actual session the client has the choice of comfortably laying on a massage table or sitting on a chair with shoes removed. Unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing will be removed and clients are recommended to wear loose, comfortable clothing. A session can either be hands-on, where the Practitioner will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where they will hold their hands slightly above the body. The client has a choice.

Reiki is a great modality for stress reduction and relaxation. Many people use Reiki for wellness. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it may assist the body in creating an environment to facilitate healing.
